Are you a programmer and looking to expand your network? I have a trick for you that I used to expand my network and it works every time 😀.

So recently I moved to a new city. I moved without any friend in the new city and 0 connections but I manage to get friends and event land a speaking spot on a prestigious event in the country.

You might be surprised but there’s a simple tricks that makes my career in the past 6 years and I do believe lots of very successful people out there doing. It is showing up. Showing up might be a simple act but it is a key to supercharge your networking even to increase your chance of success as well.

Here’s my story.

  • Applied to multiple job vacancies in fast growing startups back in 2016–17, hence showing up. Guess what? I got multiple offers.
  • Submit talks proposal to multiple international conferences. Guess what? I get accepted every time and now have talked in Indonesia, Philippines, Australia (remote), the US (remote), and Poland.
  • Applied to companies I dreamed of like Google and guess what? I got interviews
  • Explore new career in VC? Guess what? I landed a job although later was fired because I wasn’t ready at that time.
  • Closed 6 figures sales for my consulting business all due to me showing up.
  • And many more. All my success are coming from showing up.

Why showing up matters?

This post is not about me bragging about myself, but this is to guide you to show up. I’ll give you more interesting examples

  • Brian Chesky the co-founder of AirBnB started his company by renting air bed in their home in SF during a design conference. No grand plan, just pure showing up and grinding through the process.
  • Tony Fadell the creator of iPod, iPhone and Nest Thermostats early in his career try to pitch an idea to his superior and ended up rejected but got hired as CTO to run execute his idea in Phillips which are his employer client.
  • I can go on forever but the thing is people at the top they showed up.
